The Hidden Unhappiness of Mrs. Dalloway

One thing I saw when I was reading Mrs. Dalloway were the subtle hints that Mrs. Dalloway makes about her happiness. For example, whenever she talks about her husband Richard, she almost always does it in a critiquing manner. Very rarely does she say good things about him. She says that she is comfortable with him (financially) and that he gives her a good life, but the passion is missing. She talks about other love interests in a way that shows that she doesn't love Richard in a true way. She isn't truly happy with Richard.      Another example was when Peter Walsh asks her if she is happy and, just by "coincidence", Elizabeth walks in and interrupts the conversation before she can answer. This is a very interesting touch because that way we don't actually get a definite "yes or no", and we can continue to wonder if she is truly happy. Another place in the book where we see a little hint of this is on page 36, where she says- "She had just broken ...

Oswald and Ruby, Ruby and Oswald

When we started reading the part of Libra  on Jack Ruby, something immediately stood out to me: the eerie similarity between Ruby and Lee. They're obviously different in a lot of ways (Ruby is trying to take out loans from the mafia, whereas Lee is advocating for communism and the advancement of communist ideals in the United States).  The similarity, however, lies in their personalities and the way in which they are viewed by the world. Everyone else around them views them as a joke, and the serious actions they take (Lee going to the Soviet Union or Ruby beating the guy up) aren't really seen as that important. No one thinks they are actually a danger or at risk of really acting on their words, which is really interesting when you think about what they both end up doing. Obviously, Oswald ends up assassinating John F Kennedy and Ruby ends up...

It's Hard to Say I'm Sorry.

Humans are weird. We’re strange, unnatural, hypocritical beings, and many of us still don’t understand compassion. Just turn on the news, and you’ll see some story of indescribable hate and lack of empathy. Some murder, some terrorist attack, some robbery. Some world. The song that I think describes where I am right now describes where I am at any moment. It describes an aspect of human life that can only be found in people who are apologetic, who admit to their wrongdoings and try to move on. I think that almost everyone at Uni is like this, so most of you should relate too.  The song that I’m talking about is actually a love song, but I understand it as much more. It transcends topics, ideas and people. Even its name, “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”, could be interpreted as almost anything. The song describes a man who has done something bad to his partner, and is, as a most rudimentary term, apologizing. At first glance, the song is undoubtedly a love song, there is no argument...
